Buldak
Challenge
Buldak did not need help becoming famous.
Its rapid global growth had created a different problem: a brand built through products, viral culture and strong local momentum now needed a clearer system to support its next stage.
The challenge was to make Buldak more coherent globally without losing the energy, humour and unpredictability that made it successful in the first place.
My role
I lead Buldak brand strategy, global integrated marketing and design from HQ.
My scope spans brand identity and visual systems, packaging and design direction, global guidelines, campaign strategy and creative development, working across internal teams, agencies and local markets.
This has included global campaigns such as Splash Buldak and Hotter Than My EX, social-led work including Carbo Girl and Spicy Ferry, and the ongoing evolution of Buldak’s global design system.
Strategy
The broader shift has been from product-led fame to brand-led growth.
That means defining what should remain unmistakably Buldak across markets, while leaving enough flexibility for local culture and execution.
It also means expanding the meaning of the brand beyond extreme spiciness — toward craving, enjoyment, participation and the broader culture that has grown around Buldak.
Across communication and design, the objective is not uniformity. It is recognizability.
Impact
Buldak’s communication and design now operate through a more connected global brand system across products, campaigns, digital platforms, character IP and physical experiences.
During the same period, Buldak has continued to grow into one of Korea’s most visible global food brands.
The next task is less about creating awareness and more about building a brand system strong enough to sustain and extend that growth.
